FREE Water Mitigation Advice covers many home repair problems

While Water Mitigation Advice covers many home repair problems including emergency situations, you may encounter around the home.

I am going to focus on emergency related causes, as they can be your worst nightmare and the most expensive.

Water Damage and Smoke Damage

Water Damage and Smoke Damage, requires you to have knowledge of the damages and what repairs you need to correct the problem. That is true, even when you have someone else doing the work. Let me explain, I will use a Water Damage claim as an example. It is ever so easy to take short cuts or mask over problems with water damage. However, by doing so, you end up with mold and mildew in your home and thousands of dollars in damages. When you get mold and mildew in your home it can get very expensive to get rid of it. When you don’t get rid of it, everyone in the home is at risk of getting sick. It will Also hurt the value of your home.

You can easily avoid this problem when you know what to look for, and what repairs the contractor must do.

Here is another example with a water damage claim. This is very common; an inexperienced water extraction crew, removes the water from the carpet. But they don’t remove the wet under padding. This is what ends up happening, the top of the carpeting dries in a reasonable time. Because there is no air flow under the carpet, and the pad is like a sponge, it stays wet for a long time. The result is a nasty odor in the home from mold and mildew. Starting on the back of the carpeting and the under padding. When left it can spread further in the home.

Am I qualified

Ok, Am I qualified? For many years I owned a Cleaning and Restoration Business. Major Insurance Companies used my business as one of their preferred contractors. The business averaged five plus water damage claims just about every day, from one company alone. The Insurance Company would also have me inspect other contractors water extraction work. Because it was common to find wet padding left under the carpet.  My company also had to correct any problems we found and complete the rest of the job.

Smoke Damage

Did you know cleaning Smoke Damage the wrong way can drastically increase the cost and time of the job by creating more damage?

When there is smoke in the home, different surfaces require different methods of cleaning. It is very important you use the correct method to avoid damages.

On walls, the type of paint makes a big difference in the way you would clean the walls.

Carpeting, upholstery, ceilings, popcorn ceilings, floors all require different techniques.

Don’t rely on others, learn what you need to know

You don’t have to do the work yourself, however when you can demonstrate you have knowledge about what is involved in the claim. It is less likely anyone will try to do inferior work for you.

Should you trust your Insurance adjusters?

Certainly, there are good honest adjusters out there. I have had the good fortune, to work with some of the best.

However, to answer the above question honestly, I must explain some of the difference between adjusters.

Should you trust your adjuster, yes and no. This would depend on a few things, like what State do you live in?

Some States have very minimal standards to become an adjuster. This raises the possibility in these States, without hands on training, they may not be qualified.

Other States my have some requirements, graduated high school, oral exam, written exam. Here again, I have had to train so many of these adjusters.

It is not that they are not smart because most are, some had graduated from college. Here is the problem, lack of experience in the field.

If you have not been through a flood or smoke damage claim, the odds are you will not discover all the damages that need repairs.

Many adjusters only work from the office, they handle claims over the phone and have never been on a claim. Certainly this makes it hard for them to understand what you are dealing with.

When you visit Water Mitigation Advice and take advantage of the advice on the site, you will be able to tell if you have a good adjuster.

A good adjuster in most cases has been on the job awhile and goes out on claims. Because of talking with and watching the contractors on the job they have gained valuable experience.

Contractors

While it is not set in stone, a preferred contractor of a major Insurance Company usually would be well qualified.

There are many good restoration people out there, however there are just as many bad ones. My recommendation, is to ask for references from their last couple of jobs. If they are good, they won’t mind. This is my reasoning; I have worked side by side with many good contractors over the years. I have since retired, however the other day I ran into a crew from one of the contractor’s I knew. They were on a commercial jobsite he had contracted. It was obvious they had no training, as the job was cleaning smoke damage ceilings. They were making more of a mess as they had no drop cloths covering anything. In addition, cleaning was not up to this contractor’s former high standards.

Back in the day his company was also a preferred contractor with Insurance Companies. However; because now his company has grown too big, he is using temp helpers.

Reputation from the first jobs is now old, quality may not be the same.

Remember, reputation from the last few jobs is current and tells the true story.
