Popping out of gear-Loose Shifter stick
If the shifter stick is loose and wobbling it will pop out of gear.
It can’t lock in the gear position and hold it there.
This may be as simple as a broken or missing spring on the stick

You will notice once you install the spring that the shifter stick
will have the tension it needs to lock the shifter in place.
Popping out of gear-Linkage out of adjustment
Another cause of popping out of gear is the linkage is out of adjustment.
It may be because of wear, or the nut has come loose.

The nut circled in the picture is the adjustment nut for the shifter linkage.
Loosen the nut, DO NOT REMOVE. HAVE THE SHIFTER IN N position.
Push the nut and the bottom linkage in the picture towards the transmission.
Looking at your mower from the same angle as the picture you would be pushing to the LEFT.
Hold it firmly in the pushed position, making sure it is still in the N position, tighten the nut.

Blades keep spinning when not engaged
When the blades keep spinning even when disengaged, is a sign
the blades brake is not working correctly.
There are a few reasons for this,
- Worn out blade brake shoes
- Sticking or broken cable
- Broken Spring
- Bent metal plate under the 2 center pulleys.
Worn out brake shoes will make a metal to metal sound when blades are spinning
when the blades are disengaged. In this case you would have to replace the brake shoes.
This requires deck removal. Place 2 pieces 1/2” Diameter x 30 inches long pipe under deck before lowering.
This will help in moving deck around. Deck removal help is further in the post.

The cable and spring
The cable and spring, you will find attached to the PTO lever, that’s the lever that engages the blades.
While the cable may appear to be working because it engages the blades.
However, although the cable is engaging the blades, it could still be the problem.
Here is why, the cable may be sticking and not releasing all the way.
To Oil Cable
Remove the battery and its brackets to give better access to the cable.
At the top of the cable a small section of the inner cable should be exposed.
Apply 3 and 1 oil or similar oil on this inner cable,
move lever up and down a few times to allow the oil into the cable casing.
Check other end of cable on decking, see if it is moving all the way and that the spring is not broken.
Also check the clip holding the cable on the deck, make sure it has not come out.
Test the brake to see if this helped. If this did not help continue to next step.
Bent metal Plate under the 2 center pulleys
So far, every thing has not been that hard, this next step for some may still be easy.
However, others may find it a little harder, it is a bit more work involved.
This procedure requires removing the deck from the mower.
Lower deck all the way before you start. Remember to put the pipe under the deck first.
Remove the split pins, push rods out of holes on both sides and push brackets up.

Remove belt guard
Mark hole on other side that belt guard goes into before removal.

Slide deck forward, to release front holding rod.
After front is disconnected slide out slowly until you have enough room to remove cable.
Pull the clip on the cable, watch closely how it comes off or mark parts with white out.

Slide the deck all the way out.
Remove pulleys, belt, and springs off plate, remove only two center pulleys.

When everything is off plate, lay on a flat surface.
Look for any spaces between plate and flat surface, which would indicate a bend in the plate.
Mark any high spots, if you have a heavy-duty vice, you can use it to help straighten the plate.
If not heat bent area, lay on solid surface while still very hot, beat out with heavy hammer.
Check again with plate on flat surface to see if it is flat all the way.
If it is OK, you can reinstall parts.
