Refrigerator Water Tank Leak
How to tell if you have a refrigerator water tank leak. This information is for a General Electric Refrigerator that has a water and ice dispenser. However, the information may apply to a few other brands also.
If you see water under the bottom tray in the refrigerator side (not the freezer side). Odds are its a refrigerator water tank leak, which is usually behind the second tray from the bottom. Don’t be fooled, at first it may just be dripping, with a little puddle under the bottom tray.
A word of caution, DO NOT ignore it.
Refrigerator Water Tank Leak can cause a big problem
Because the tank is showing signs it is getting weak and may split further flooding your home.
The tank is not that expensive, if you’re a little handy doing repairs, do it yourself. Save the repair money for going out to dinner. I will post a few pictures here to help you. I will also include a link to my YouTube channel showing how in a video. You will find the link next to the bottom of this post.
It is important to realize water marks are signs of a leak.

Here is a common area that the tank leaks.

Before you can remove the tank,
There are 2 screws, and the water hoses you need to remove to get the water tank out.
You will have to loosen the light (POWER OFF) and turn it out of your way. You will also need to remove light shade, take two top screws out and lift to get access to top screw on tank.
One screw is under the light, the other one is visible on the left of the tank.
The hoses disconnect points, one in the back behind the back cover and the other one is on the left front behind the grill.
Before you start any work
Before you start any work on the refrigerator disconnect the power cord and turn the water OFF to the refrigerator.
Once you have confirmed it is the water tank that is leaking, then you can start to prepare to remove the tank. First you want to remove the front grill at the bottom of the refrigerator. There are two screws, one at each end of the grill. After you remove the grill you should see the hose and the disconnect. Place a towel under the disconnect because there will be water left in the line.

You only need to disconnect the right side, that is the hose attached to the tank
Next proceed to remove cover at the bottom on the back of the refrigerator. Once the cover is off you will see a solenoid with the hoses attached.

Remove this cover then you will see the solenoid.

Remove this one screw and slide out from frame. Then remove the hose on the bottom the same way you did the front hose. When reconnecting just remove any plugs in the end of the new hose. Then push the hose in as far as it will go, where you just remove the other hose.
After hoses are disconnected you can remove the water tank
Once disconnected you can pull the old tank and hoses out of the refrigerator.
To install new tank
Push hoses trough the holes, long hose on the left (long hose will go to front of refrigerator

Short hose will go to the back on the solenoid. Just push hoses into disconnect as far as they will go. After inserted, gently pull to make sure they are secure.

Reinstall back cover, front grill, racks, and trays inside the refrigerator. Turn the water on to the refrigerator, check for any leaks before plugging in the power cord.
Once teste ok, run a gallon or so through the water dispenser to make sure it is clean.
OK every thing is fine? Yes. Great job.
Because you deserve it, take the money you just saved and take your favorite person out to dinner with you.
